What are the three types of acrylic?

2023-12-04

Acrylic is a versatile and popular material used in various industries for its durability, flexibility, and wide range of applications. There are three main types of acrylic: extruded acrylic, cast acrylic, and impact-modified acrylic.

1. Extruded acrylic:
Extruded acrylic, also known as continuous cast acrylic or PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate), is the most common type of acrylic used. It is manufactured by a continuous extrusion process, where acrylic pellets are melted, then pushed through a die and formed into sheets. Extruded acrylic sheets are available in various thicknesses, colors, and finishes.

Extruded acrylic offers excellent optical clarity and is relatively cheaper compared to cast acrylic. It is commonly used in signage, point-of-purchase displays, light fixtures, and architectural applications. However, it is less resistant to UV light and may turn yellow over time if exposed to direct sunlight.

2. Cast acrylic:
Cast acrylic, also known as cell cast acrylic or MMA (Methyl Methacrylate), is another widely used type of acrylic. It is manufactured by pouring liquid monomer and a polymerization initiator into a mold, then allowing it to cure and solidify. Cast acrylic sheets have better dimensional stability, optical properties, and resistance to weathering compared to extruded acrylic.

Cast acrylic is more expensive but offers better scratch resistance and can be easily machined, polished, and shaped. This makes it suitable for applications where optical clarity and durability are crucial, such as aquariums, retail displays, lenses, and automotive parts.

3. Impact-modified acrylic:
Impact-modified acrylic, also known as acrylic-polybutadiene-acrylonitrile (ACR-PBAN), is a specialized type of acrylic that incorporates additives to improve impact resistance. The addition of rubbery polymers, such as polybutadiene, increases the toughness and resistance to cracking or breaking.

Impact-modified acrylic is used in applications where impact resistance is essential, such as safety shields, protective barriers, machine guards, and outdoor signage. It retains many of the desirable properties of standard acrylic, such as optical clarity and weather resistance.

Each type of acrylic has its own advantages and is suitable for different applications. It is important to consider factors such as cost, optical properties, impact resistance, and environmental conditions when choosing the right type of acrylic for your specific needs.
